Illinois has returned more than $3 billion in unclaimed property to residents through its I-Cash program. The search and claim process is completely free — anyone offering to find it for a fee is selling you something the state will do for nothing.
Step 1: Use the official I-Cash search
Go to icash.illinoistreasurer.gov. Search your name, prior names, and any business names you've owned. Illinois shows the property type and approximate value range right in the results.
Step 2: Submit through the I-Cash portal
Click 'Claim' on the listing. Illinois auto-approves many small claims (under $100) when ID and address match.
Documents you'll need
- Driver's license or state ID
- Social Security number verification
- Proof of any address connected to the property (especially if you've moved since)
- Heir or executor documentation for deceased-owner claims
Avoid finder services
Illinois caps finder fees at 10% on properties over five years old, but every dollar they keep is a dollar you don't need to give up. The state will never charge you to claim what's already yours.
