The Pennsylvania Treasury currently holds more than $4 billion in unclaimed property — roughly one in every ten Pennsylvanians has money waiting. The claim process is free and runs entirely through patreasury.gov.
Step 1: Search patreasury.gov/unclaimed-property
Use the official PA Treasury search. Try your full legal name, then variations: maiden name, common misspellings, business names you've owned. Don't trust third-party 'finder' sites that take a percentage — Pennsylvania caps finders at 15%, but you don't need them at all.
Step 2: Start your claim online
Click 'Claim' next to any property that matches you. The PA Treasury claim portal walks you through each property type with the specific documentation it requires.
Step 3: Gather documentation
- Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport)
- Proof of Social Security number
- Proof of the address tied to the property (old utility bill, tax return, lease)
- For deceased relatives: death certificate plus proof of your relationship and any will or letters of administration
Step 4: Submit and track
Most simple claims under $500 are paid within 30 days. Larger or estate claims can take 60–120 days. You can check status anytime through your PA Treasury account.
Common reasons claims get rejected
- Name variations not documented (e.g. claiming under maiden name without marriage certificate)
- Address proof outside the property's reporting period
- Estate claims missing the small-estate affidavit (PA allows it for estates under $50,000)
