How to Claim the Recovery Rebate Credit in 2025

If you missed a stimulus payment, the Recovery Rebate Credit is how you get it back. Here's the eligibility window and the exact form to file.

The Recovery Rebate Credit is the IRS mechanism for claiming any Economic Impact Payment (stimulus check) you didn't receive but were eligible for. The IRS estimated over a million people still hadn't claimed their 2021 payment as of 2024.

Eligibility basics

  • You were a U.S. citizen or resident alien in the eligibility year
  • You weren't a dependent on someone else's return
  • You had a valid Social Security number
  • Your AGI was below the phase-out threshold ($75K single, $150K joint for the 2021 payment)

How to claim it

File or amend your 2021 federal tax return (Form 1040 or 1040-X) and complete the Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet. The deadline to claim a refund is generally 3 years from the original return due date — so the 2021 credit must be claimed by April 15, 2025.

If you already filed but didn't claim it

File Form 1040-X to amend. Attach the worksheet showing your calculation. Refunds on amended returns typically take 16–20 weeks.

Verifying what you already received

Log into your IRS Online Account and check 'Tax Records' → 'Economic Impact Payment Information.' This is the source of truth — if the IRS says they paid you but you never got it, file Form 3911 to trace the missing payment.
