The standard set
Have clear scans ready before you start — most portals reject blurry or cropped uploads.
- Driver's license, state ID, or passport
- Social Security card, W-2, or tax document showing the number
- Utility bill, lease, bank statement, or tax record tying you to the listed address
- The claim ID from the search result
Heir and estate claims
If the owner has died, states need the death certificate plus documentation of your authority: letters testamentary, a small-estate affidavit, or a will, depending on the state and the amount.
Securities and safe deposit contents
Shares, dividends, and safe deposit box contents take longer because the state must verify ownership history and, in some cases, reissue or liquidate holdings — expect 90 to 180 days rather than 30 to 60.
